A friend of mine asked me how I relate having fun with the discipline of being a distance runner. My immediate thought was to use my longtime coach and mentor, Mike Scannell, analogy of balancing school/work, running, and social life. The Three Legged Stool. It is important to maintain all of these aspects in order to sustain a balanced life. If you attribute each of the three to the three legs of a stool, you can start to picture what your life looks like sitting on that stool. If all summer long you party, watch tv, and sleep, your stool will tip over. If you work all day long and are too tired to exercise or spend time with your family or friends, your stool will tip. Lastly, what is sometimes our choice as distance runners, if you focus all of your attention on running, don’t do any of your homework or study, and block out your family and friends that do not participate in such strenuous training, your stool will tip.
Now, the actual question here. How? This is easier said than done and the truth is there is no right way to do things. Everyone has different priorities and it is important to keep these in check(keep your stool balanced). My best advice is to keep in mind there are 24 hours a day, everyday, and this is the same for every human being on the planet. You have time daily to get the work you done that you need to do, train at an elite level, and still have time at the end of the day to have fun. Remember the old commercial from the Beijing Olympics where Home Depot said they were the leading employer of Olympians? I don’t know about you but my first thought was how can someone that was so phenomenal at their sport need to work, or how do they even have the time? The truth is, however, they can and do, and so can you. Brian Sell was one of those athletes working for Home Depot. During this time he was also working part time at the Brooks-Hanson’s running store. It can be done, and you can enjoy it.
You always hear the statistics about HS GPA in relation to participation in extracurricular activities and what I think it comes down to is time management. When someone has too much time on their hands that is when they get in trouble. Athletes are always the best at doing this balancing act and that is because they care. If you love what you do, and you put that little bit of extra effort into the legs of the stool you need to increase, you will get exactly what you want out of life. Wake up each day with a plan, know exactly what you need to do that day to keep your stool balanced.
Example: Thursday morning wake up, run 30min shake out. During this time is when I make my plan for the day, what classes I have, what assignments I have to turn in, what practice will entail, and what I will do for the night. As I complete these throughout the day I know I am closer to what I want and that makes me happy, that is what fuels me to keep going. No matter how much I work, I know their will be that time at night to watch the game, watch a movie, play monopoly, or do whatever it is I would like to do, which sometimes might be just sleep!
